A Tale of Legendary Fare and Timeless Spirits: The History of Sheeley House Saloon

Prologue: A Rich Legacy

Step into the Sheeley House Saloon, a landmark of the Chippewa Valley, steeped in history and charm. From its origins before the Civil War to its place among revered establishments like the Cook Rutledge Mansion and Leinenkugel’s Brewery, this saloon has stories to tell.

Chapter 1: The Early Years

In the late 1800s, the Sheeley House Saloon stood proudly as one of the last surviving establishments among a row of similar establishments along the Chippewa River. It started as a livery, with the second floor serving as living quarters and the third floor hosting small rooms for weary travelers.

Chapter 2: The Sheeley Era

The early 1900s brought prosperity to Chippewa Falls, and it was during this time that James and Kate Sheeley took over the saloon. James tended the bar while Kate and their three children, Howard, William, and Anna, worked tirelessly to provide meals and maintain the rooms. The Sheeley House became known for its accommodations, serving those who worked round the clock in the nearby river and industries.

Chapter 3: A Haven of Intrigue

While not officially a brothel, the Sheeley House was considered a house of ill repute, surrounded by whispered tales of scandal and mischief. Despite the restrictions placed on women in saloons at that time, the third-floor sleeping quarters held secrets of their own.

Chapter 4: The Haunted Legends

The Sheeley House has earned its place on the list of Wisconsin’s most haunted places. With a history that includes six documented deaths and one mysterious one, the spirits of the past linger within its walls. Anna, a long-term resident, is believed to have returned as a spirit after her passing.

Chapter 5: Securing a Legacy

In 1981, Attorney Dave and Sharon Railey purchased the property and undertook extensive renovations, investing over $220,000 to preserve the historic structure. The Sheeley House was then placed on the National Historic Registry, ensuring its survival for future generations.

Chapter 6: A Coexistence with Spirits

Since reopening in 2014 under current owner Jes Jensen, the Sheeley House has welcomed both living patrons and ethereal visitors. Experiences range from lights flickering and items moving mysteriously to the appearance of apparitions and unexplained voices.
